Basava was borin in Begawadi, a town of Hugund Taluk in Bagalkot ditrict. (Bijapur district of karnataka) in a strict family.
Madras and Madalambe were parents of Basavanna, Madaras was a town president of Begawadi, he was a religous and a kind person engaged in Charity and was a Philapanthropist.
He had a sister who was 12 years older than him. He was very attached to his sister, He grew in the company of his sister. Nagamma was not only his sister but his first Guru who always guided him. At the age of 14-16 she got married to Shivadev (Shiva Swamy).
When Basavanna was born he was without any moment, he did not cry even surprisingly godly saint Jatavedamuni (Eeshanya Guru) visited to Madras’s house. He wipped the face of the child with a cloth dipped in warm water, he applied bhasma on the forehead, tied Rudrakshi and Linga around his neck, Further the Guru pronounced Panchakshari Hymm in the ears of the baby and called Basava, “Come on”. Hearing the call, the baby was awakened, the baby moved sidewise, opened the eyes and smiled at the Parents and Guru. The parents of Basavanna jumped in joy and started to thank the Guru, they place the child at the feet of Guru and utter, ‘we dedicate the child to your grace.’ The child was named Basava as pronounced by the Guru. Madras performed Uupanayanam of Basavanna at the age of 8, Uupanayanam was done against the wish of Basavanna.
With Linga in his neck blessrd by the Guru at the time of his birth, he ran away to Begawadi, and joined the Gurukul at Kudala Sangam. He did not like to stay with people floating in the stagnant water of bling beliefs and immoral customs and had migratted to Sangamma. Basavanna spent about 10 years in the splendid company of the Guru and turned to be a matured man. When his parents had come to visit him, he refused to get back to Begawadi. Basavanna was soon married to Gangabike and Neelambike. He started his career as an accountant at Mangaladev in the court of Kalachuri King Bijala, When Bijala acquited the power at Basavakalyana by overpowering Tailapa. Basavanna also went to kalyana with his honesty, hardwork and visionary mission. Basava rose to the positipn of Prime Minister in the court of Kind Bijala, who ruled from 1162-1167 at Kalyana (Basavakalyana). There he established the Anubhava Mantapa, a spiritual parliment to openly discuss Lingayatism, which attracted many sainst from throught India. He believed in the principle of Kayakave Kailasa. (Work puts you on the path of heaven, work is heaven). It was this time that the Vachanas, were simple to understand poetic writings such as :-
*The power of knowledge destroys ignorance, The power of light dissipates darkness; The power of truth is foe of all untruth; The sharanas experience of god is the sole cruse of worldiness.*
-Lord Kudala Sangam.
Through his revolutionary ideas and actions against social evils, Basava stirred alot of controversy by allowing untouchables to have lunch with him and passing a marriage between a Bramhin woman and an Untouchable man. Basavnna left Kalyana in 1196 with heavy heart and marched towards Kudala Sangam. On the way he preached people about humanity, morality, honesty, equality, induviduality, simplicity and the diginity of labor. He came to Kudala Sangam on the call of his Guru. To his misfortune, his Guru was no more; he had already merged with Linga, he was very depressed by listening the news he had come to Kudala Sangam without even telling his wives.
After a few days he was again stunned on hearing the murder of Bijala wjo was his friend more than his brother-in-law. There was nobody around him to console. He couldn’t do anything. Pronouncing, ‘Sake Madai Thande Lokadetavaninnu. (Oh God, Please end my role in this world.) He sat for meditation rejecting food and water at the place of confluence of Krishna and Malaprabh rivers. He never got up again, he died🙏
